IP Address

Definition:

An IP address is a set of numbers and periods that uniquely identifies a device using the Internet Protocol.

Information:

IP stands for "Internet Protocol," which specifies how data is sent over the internet or local network. In essence, IP addresses serve as identifiers of devices on a network, allowing information to be sent between them: they provide location information and make devices available for communication. Computers, routers, and websites need to be differentiated on the internet. IP addresses provide a way to do so and are vital to how the internet works. IP addresses consist of a string of numbers separated by periods. An IP address consists of four numbers; an example would be 192.158.1.38. Each of the four numbers can be anywhere between 0 and 255. This means that the full IP address range is 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255.
